In Escape Room: Stranded!, students will dive behind the scenes of escape rooms and discover what it takes to create mind-bending puzzles and games. Students will visit a local escape room to experience the immersive adventure firsthand. Then, they’ll draw on that challenge to design and fabricate interactive puzzles and props for a room set on a deserted island, where their players have washed ashore and must solve their way off before the tide comes in.

This studio combines critical thinking and creativity, challenging students to build locks, hidden compartments, and coded clues out of cardboard, wood, and simple electronics. Students will write the story, design the set, and test their puzzles on fellow players, refining them until they are tricky but fair. The studio ends with an open escape room, where visitors try to escape the island.

Students will come up with a simple game concept, create rules, and challenges, and code it to make it playable. Meanwhile, they will design and iterate a handheld console unique to their game that can be used to play the game.

Using microcontrollers, buttons, and small displays, they’ll wire up the electronics and playtest their games on their device. Along the way, students will iterate on ergonomics, style, and branding so their console looks as good as it plays. The studio ends with an arcade game off, where visitors try out every device and compete for the highest score.

71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. Our oceans are vastly unexplored. Increasingly we need to engage with our oceans as a result of climate change, population growth, pollution, and other impacts of human influence. Oftentimes explorers, scientists, ecologists, and rescuers find themselves in underwater situations where they don’t have adequate tools to fulfill their mission. What if we had robots to aid us in our efforts underwater? What if these bots were inspired by the years of evolutionary adaptation the natural world has undergone at these dark depths? Enter the world of deep sea robotics where the underwater environment calls for a shift in the way robots are designed and deployed.

In this studio, students will develop robots that use the depth of the sea to their advantage as they maneuver through the sea floors, slither through the kelp forest, and collect rare specimens unscathed using biomimetic grippers. Students will take inspiration from deep sea creatures and design devices and robots to carry out underwater missions to protect our oceans and cohabitate with diverse underwater ecosystems.

Art has always shaped how we see the world, and it also leaves an impact on it. Traditional art materials like plastics, synthetic resins, and chemical-heavy pigments leave their footprint on our planet.

This studio explores an alternative route for artmaking: biomaterials. Students will explore this innovative medium for art and design, experimenting with bioplastics, bioleathers, and other materials grown or cooked from natural ingredients like agar and gelatin. Students will develop their own recipes, playing with color, texture, and mold-making to see how the properties of a material can shape the form and feeling of a piece.

Through hands-on testing and iteration, they’ll learn what makes these materials flexible, translucent, sturdy, or curious, and how to use them for both 2D and sculptural work. Afterward, students will use these innovative materials to create works of artistic expression. By the end, each student will create a full-scale art piece using biomaterials and showcase their work in a gallery-style exhibition.
